About this product
The image was crystal clear, with no jagged edges, artifacts, or other blemishes. The motion was superb and also very natural, making all the special effects when Barry Allen zips around at super-human speed appear as realistic as possible. The picture quality was every bit as clean as it is through my Oppo--they are, after all, based on very similar technology. With Dolby Atmos, sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead.
The format combines a channel-based audio bed with object-oriented sound to place and move specific effects around the room, creating a breathtakingly realistic and captivating sonic atmosphere. Sound designers and artists are free to mix in a 3D space, steering effects through surround channels and adding a seamless overhead dimension with discrete height channels. Additionally, a new Dolby surround up-mixer allows for your current channel-based content to be expanded to fill the flexible speaker layouts of a Dolby Atmos system. Room correction can be a blessing, but it’s rarely a panacea. It’s most effective when you’ve placed your speakers correctly. To use AccuEQ, you plug the included microphone into the receiver’s front panel and then initiate the step-by-step guide. Onkyo says it designed the HT-S7700 to be one of the easiest HTIB systems to set up, and they deliver on that promise. There’s no need to strip or cut wires—everything is pre-cut.
Comparing the Onkyo to Orb Audio’s Complete Home Theater, the Orb setup sounded much more open and nuanced. The guitar at the opening of U2’s “Song for Someone” from Songs of Innocence lacked a natural, full-bodied presence on the Onkyo system, and I missed the delicate sense of fingers striking the guitar strings. Comparatively speaking, through the Orb Audio setup I had a much better sense of the guitar’s body and its individual strings being pucked and strummed. Most people will find listening to music on the Onkyo system to be a highly satisfactory experience—especially music with good bass lines. The system imaged well and presented a well-developed soundstage. Nevertheless, there was persistent image smearing–especially when I wanted to focus in on individual instruments during songs.

Sure, with movies that use five speakers plus a subwoofer, you get good sound; but, the minute you go down to two-channel, it's all over. You don't get the hefty midrange presentation with Bill Evans' piano or the finer textures of Davis' trumpet reproduced like on a finer-grade pair of bookshelf speakers. However, for home theater speakers that came with a pre-packaged system, these are about as good as you're going to get.
After all, if no competitor in its category can demonstrate stronger performance, you can't legitimately count an issue as a weakness, even if it is something you dislike. The problem is that, at the time of this writing, Dolby Atmos-capable products are just coming on to the scene and there really isn't any competition out there. I played around with the Dolby Surround mode for Blu-ray discs, as well as TV programs. Running Dolby Surround processing with native Dolby Digital 5.1 material sounded much better than it did with two-channel material, maybe because the processing to add only the extra Atmos channels was not as much of a stretch.

The HT-S7700 is a real winner for the first-time home-theater buyer and technology novice. It’s a solid, feature-rich package that delivers a thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying movie experience at home. Throw in the Dolby Atmos implementation, and you have a package that will bring a big smile to your face. I was pleasantly surprised at the performance of Onkyo’s subwoofer. A 10-inch subwoofer won’t deliver deep bass, but the Onkyo sub gave me a top-to-bottom, thoroughly satisfying experience. Best of all, the Onkyo sub didn’t try to reproduce bass beyond its means.
Would the Onkyo HT-S7700 home theater system be able to remove that doubt? All of this works very well when the action is located in front of the viewer's perspective. However, when objects fly overhead that pan from front to back or vice versa, such as when a remote-controlled drone in Transformers flies above the screen position, the illusion breaks down a little. When the sound is supposed to come from or go to the rear, it never truly rose above ear level at the back end, where I place my surround speakers. Since there were no rear height speakers in this setup, it would be unfair to expect sound to be realistically generated overhead in the back. I made sure to set my U-Verse box to Surround mode, where it outputs a Dolby Digital 5.1 signal to the receiver.
The included subwoofer, which sports a 10-inch driver, was larger than I expected. With all that being said, let's gauge the HT-S7700 on its own merits. Video performance was stellar, bested only by top-dollar outboard video processors. Sonically, you have a capable receiver combined with a reasonably high-quality speaker package and better-than-expected bass performance from a decent sub. Putting together a 5.1-channel system of equal performance separately would probably cost at least $1,200. Consider the Onkyo HT-S7700 an astounding deal and the Dolby Atmos capability a free bonus on top.
